I have always known, ever since I was a child with my feet dangling from the pew, that there is a God and he loves me.
One of my favorite songs as a child was (and still is) “I Am A Child of God.” I think I was still in Junior Primary, which is the 3- to 7-year-old group when our Prophet, Spencer W. Kimball, said we needed to sing the chorus with the word “do” instead of “know.”
As a child, I was mad for a bit, because “know” was the way I had learned it; but I’ve grown to appreciate the “do.”
I Am A Child of God
I am a child of God.
And he has sent me here,
Has given me an earthly home
With parents kinds and dear.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me,
Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do
To live with him someday.
I am a child of God,
And so my needs are great;
Help me to understand his words
Before it grows too late.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me,
Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do
To live with him someday.
I am a child of God.
Rich blessings are in store;
If I but learn to do his will,
I’ll live with him once more.
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me,
Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do
To live with him someday.
It is found in the Children’s Songbook (which is also on-line at LDS.org) and was written by Naomi Randall (lyrics) and Mildred Pettit (music).
