My Testimony of a Living Prophet
I actually gained a testimony that there is a living prophet on the earth when I was in 4th or 5th grade. When Joseph Fielding Smith passed away and Harold B. Lee was made prophet, I accepted that in the way of a child. In fact, I remember excitedly raising my hand in Primary class when our teacher asked, “Who knows the name of our new prophet?” I had my arm up high and that “pick me! pick me!” look on my face. She did, and I blurted out, “Robert E. Lee.” Everyone laughed, because of course, Robert E. Lee was a general in the confederate army.
Harold B. Lee was not prophet for very long. He died a short time (about a year?) later. This time I was not so accepting. I wanted to know for myself if the new guy, Spencer W. Kimball, really was a prophet of God.
Not too long after I prayed to know for myself whether or not Spencer W. Kimball was a prophet, we had a church conference in our area. I don’t remember now if it was a Stake Conference or an Area Conference; but the Primary children were singing and I was in the choir, which meant I was on the stand when President Kimball entered the room.
We all stood. The moment he entered the door I knew. The Spirit bore witness to me that he was a prophet of God.
