I am so thankful for the scriptures that are filled with the stories about ordinary people.
There was a time when one of my sons really liked the phrase, "What would Jesus do?" There were necklaces one could buy, or wristbands or other things with a reminder: WWJD. While applauding the sentiment, in my everyday life, when I found myself in trouble, it was ususally after doing something Jesus wouldn't do.
So I love it that the scriptures are filled with stories of everyday people who get mad, who are unkind, who covet a little, maybe get jealous, who don't want to be obedient but don't want to be particularly bad. I like reading about how they either suffered unpleasant consequences or found the uncomfortable road to repentance.
I like reading about the people who were persecuted, or who stood strong, exercised faith in a hard situation, were forogiving. I like seeing that they also dealt with discouragement, or reluctant family and were still strong. I like reading how they gained their testimonies and their knowledge. Both came from their experiences and personal thought and study.
And I am so thankful for a Savior that offers Comfort, strength, guidance and Atonement.
